‘Dark Days’ ~ A Glimpse of Loss and Hope
Dark Days is a hauntingly powerful portrait of an orphaned baby Bornean Orangutan (Pongo Pygmaeus), captured in a quiet moment of reflection. With eyes cast into the distance ~ or perhaps toward an uncertain future ~ the image speaks volumes about loss, resilience and the silent weight of trauma endured at an early age.
This close up photograph invites the viewer into an intimate space, revealing not just the vulnerability of one young life, but the broader crisis facing orangutans in the wild. Deforestation, poaching and habitat destruction continue to tear families apart, leaving countless young orangutans like this one in the care of rescue centres.
Dark Days is not only a visual story of sadness, but also a call to action ~ a reminder that behind every rescued animal is a fight for survival and a hope for brighter days ahead.

This image was taken with respect and care, supporting vital conservation efforts to protect and rehabilitate one of the world’s most endangered great apes.
FUN FACT: Orangutan (meaning "person of the forest”) is a fitting name for these intelligent, tree-dwelling primates who share around 97% of their DNA with humans and spend most of their lives high in the rainforest canopy.
