Photographer Liam Lynch reimagines one of Australia’s most enduring legends with Kelly Gang ~ Joe Byrne On White. Inspired by the infamous Jerilderie Letter, this striking portrait peers beyond the iron mask to illuminate the defiance, vulnerability and humanity of the Kelly Gang.
Just as Ned Kelly’s words revealed wit, intelligence and a fierce plea for justice, Lynch’s imagery contrasts the raw symbolism of the armour with the emotional resonance of Kelly’s story. The iconic plate-metal body armour, created by Australian Film Industry award-winning costume designer Anna Borghazi, forms the archetypal frame for this narrative ~ courage, rebellion and the blurred lines between hero and outlaw.
Exhibited in Melbourne and Castlemaine, and collected by notable figures including film producer Nelson Woss (Red Dog, Ned Kelly), Lynch’s Kelly Gang Series reignites the bushranger mystique in the Australian psyche. Bold, theatrical and deeply rooted in history, this artwork is a statement piece that connects past to present.
