‘Zorro’ ~ The Elder of the Forest
Zorro is a powerful close up portrait of a senior male Bornean Orangutan (Pongo Pygmaeus), his deep set eyes gazing forward in a moment of quiet contemplation. Every wrinkle and strand of hair tells a story of survival, wisdom and time spent among the trees of the rainforest.
Named after the dignified individual featured in the image, Zorro captures more than a face ~ it reveals a presence. His calm, thoughtful expression reflects the emotional depth and intelligence for which orangutans are renowned. As one of the forest’s true elders, Zorro stands as a symbol of resilience and the profound connection between great apes and their environment.
This artwork is both a tribute and a reminder to respect the wisdom of age and to protect those who carry it.

This image was taken with respect and care, supporting vital conservation efforts to protect and rehabilitate one of the world’s most endangered great apes.
FUN FACT: In Malay and Indonesian, orang means “person” and utan comes from hutan, meaning “forest.” Put together, orangutan quite literally translates to “person of the forest.”
