‘Burnt Moon’ ~ Shadows of the Outlaw
Burnt Moon is a haunting composite artwork that layers the spectral presence of Ned Kelly’s iconic armour against a scorched forest and a brooding moonlit sky. The weathered metal emerges through the darkness like a ghost of history, its silhouette both defiant and tragic — a symbol of rebellion etched into Australia’s cultural memory.
The interplay of moonlight, smoke, and charred landscape amplifies the duality of Kelly’s story: outlaw and folk hero, villain and martyr. Liam Lynch uses the armour not merely as an object, but as an archetype — a vessel for the contradictions of courage, defiance and survival in a world divided by class, power, and justice.
Burnt Moon invites the viewer to step into that liminal space where history, myth and landscape collide — where the bush becomes a stage, and the armour a relic of both violence and legend.
