Collection: Rays
Smooth rays and stingrays are flat-bodied cartilaginous fish belonging to the same family as sharks. Smooth rays, like the cowtail or estuary ray, are named for their soft, scaleless skin and wide, rounded pectoral fins that give them a graceful, gliding motion through the water. Stingrays are best known for the venomous barb on their tails, used only in self-defence. Both smooth rays and stingrays are bottom-dwellers, often found buried in sandy seabeds or cruising coastal shallows. They feed on small fish, crustaceans, and molluscs, playing a vital role in marine ecosystems. Despite their often gentle nature, many species face threats from habitat loss and fishing practices.
