Syngnathidae is a family of uniquely shaped fish that includes seahorses, pipefish and sea dragons. Known for their elongated bodies, tubular snouts and bony armour like exteriors, members of the Syngnathidae family are slow moving and rely on stealth and camouflage to avoid predators. One of their most remarkable traits is that males carry and give birth to the young ~ a rare role reversal in the animal kingdom. These delicate and fascinating creatures are found in shallow coastal waters around the world, often among seagrasses and coral reefs, and are important indicators of marine ecosystem health.
